Engineering Design Knowledge Management

چکیده

In recent years, greater global competition is pressuring organizations to produce industrial products with the shortest possible lead times, high quality, and lowest costs. The lifecycle of a product includes many phases such as requirement definition, conceptual design, production, operation, maintenance, and so forth. Each phase in the lifecycle would involve the product information, for example, using some information that comes from other phase(s) and generating some new information during the phase. Engineering design knowledge (EDK) of a product consists of the product information related to the design process of the product. It should be noticed that modern products are complex, and their developments have increasingly become collaborative tasks among teams that are physically, geographically, and temporally separated (Caldwell et al., 2000; Szykman, Sriram, Bochenek, Racz, & Senfaute, 2000). As design becomes increasingly knowledge intensive and collaborative, traditional design databases, which merely provide access to schematics, computeraided design (CAD) models, and documentation, are inadequate for modern product design (Szykman et al., 2000), and the need for computational design frameworks to support the representation, integration, maintenance, and use of knowledge among distributed designers becomes more critical. The representation, integration, maintenance, and use of knowledge consist of the knowledge management of engineering knowledge.

Knowledge Network: An Information Repository with Services for Managing Concurrent Engineering Design

Our effort is to construct a Knowledge Aided Design (KAD) system, which aims at supporting concurrent engineering design and improving cooperation and coordination among design engineers. The KAD system centers on a knowledge network that stores design knowledge and provides services for the management of shared design, and a WWW user interface for knowledge access and acquisition. The knowledg...

Knowledge management in software design: a tool and a trial

The paper describes experiences in applying a knowledge management tool, called CODE, to the major knowledge management problems in the design of a large commercial software system. There is explanation of how the design of such a product was documented as a CODE knowledge base by using CODE to carefully analyse all the important concepts and terms in direct consultation with the developers. CO...

Exploiting knowledge management: the engineering and construction perspective

Construction companies have always relied on their knowledge assets to provide services to clients. In recent years the terminology ‘knowledge management’ has been introduced. Knowledge management (KM) seeks to formalize the manner in which companies exploit their knowledge assets by harnessing organizational knowledge, promoting greater collaboration between groups with similar interests, capt...

CoLinK: Cooperative Knowledge Management for Engineering Teams

Due to today’s increasingly complex processes in planning and design, knowledge management (KM) is becoming a crucial factor of success in the engineering sector. In a participatory design project we created a prototype for a process oriented KM system (CoLinK), which allows engineers to jointly model projects with generic process descriptions, creating a virtual engineering community within th...
